Long Neck, Heavy Heavy Head - 1 - Long Arm Rolls the Hea

Long Neck, Heavy Heavy Head -1 - Long Arm Rolls The Head

Gyroscoping from lying to sitting

Based on “Taking the Arm Back” from “And the Head is Free Series” by Arlyn Zones, GCFT®

Roll up from the floor with the grace of Audrey Hepburn. No more neck and abs straining! This lesson, based on a series by my trainer Arlyn Zones, guides us to eliminate neck strain, and thus upper and low back strain, by using the hip and shoulder to create a gyroscopic force.

In this variation of the possibly familiar, side-lying “Fiddling Arms” lesson, extending the arm first forward and then up and back rolls the shoulder blade, which rolls the spine down to the sacrum and up through the neck. Layer on sliding the knee forward, which rolls the hip and also the spine, gives momentum to roll to the side. The trick is to watch the hand and knee, and keep the head heavy, heavy, heavy, and the neck long, long, long to create the gyroscopic force to roll up effortlessly.

We will explore both sides, and add in the breath and pelvic floor for a complete experience.

Set Up for a Side-lying Lesson:

  • Side-lying on a mat with support under ear/cheek so that the nose, breastbone and navel are in a straight line.

  • Optional padding between knees for side-lying

  • OR side-sitting in a level, stable, armless chair, with knees and hips level, possibly a seated, shoulder-height support for arms

How you might feel after this lesson: Looser all over; Longer; Open; Breathing deeply; Deep connections from elbows and knees to core; Able to use core to roll torso; Able to let head be heavy and neck long; Able to support the head from deep in the spine; Able to maintain shivasana as you roll up to sit and stand.

We have to continue to learn. We have to be open. And we have to be ready to release our knowledge in order to come to a higher understanding of reality.
