Full Circle - 5 - Baby Steps
Full Circle - 5 - Baby Steps
Spiraling back to the beginning
Based on David Zemach-Berson’s “Liberate Your Mouth and Jaw – Introductory Lesson”
Spiraling back to a lesson that spirals back to a beginning: a history lesson of movement. It’s the introductory lesson from David Zemach-Berson’s “Liberate Your Mouth and Jaw” series, which, as I read it, links the primordial movements of one-celled animals reaching out for food to today’s humans.
‘Baby Steps’ refers to these primordial movements, and the intuitive connection of the feet to the mouth, jaw, and head that develop way before crawling is a twinkle in a baby’s eye. Also, to be in total harmony with ourselves, we can ‘walk like the Buddha.’
As part of this “Full Circle” series, it is a return to a lesson we have explored a while ago. It works through the many connections we have been exploring since we began: breath/diaphragm to pelvis, feet to breath, feet to pelvis to head, feet to head and jaw, pelvic floor to jaw, etc. Of course the spine links it all up, and we will be going deep into observing the spine as it arches up, softenis down, and “locks in” upwards for power.
Science Nerd Candy Bowl: nothing new this week, but keep the diaphragm in mind as we breathe deeply in coordination with the legs, head and pelvic floor
Set Up for a Supine lesson:
Lie on floor with support under head or legs as needed to keep the neck and low back long and relaxed
Sit on a firm, stable chair with knees and hips level
If you tie your hair in clips, you might want to take them out for this one - lots of head nods, rolls and slides
How you might feel after this lesson: Longer; Soft lips, eyes, jaw; Open; Breathing deeply; Aware of your back ribs and spine; Disconnected and reconnected; Calm;
