Like A Natural Woman - 12 - Stand in Awareness

Putting it to the test - another way of feeling the floor in the real world

Based on “Sitting to stand with different placement of feet” or “The $100 bill lesson” by Alan Questel

Elegance is the only beauty that never fades - Audrey Hepburn

"Elegance is the only beauty that never fades" - Audrey Hepburn

I couldn’t leave a series at eleven lessons - just too odd. Plus, so many of you have missed so many lessons, another recap can’t hurt.

This lesson breaks the craft of standing from a chair into tiny steps, each an opportunity to refine your elegance is rising from your seat or exiting your vehicle.

All the elements of the series are here: long spine, activated glutes, engaged abs, lifted sternum, connected feet, aligned thighs, shoulders melting into the hips while the ears levitate upward. And what else? Oh, yes, breath.

My trainer Alan Questel created this lesson and it’s one of my go-tos, though it’s been a while. Simple as it seems as we change, the quality of the way we stand changes; it’s always appropriate to go back with a beginner’s mind. And then, with the beginner’s mind, think about how to apply this new knowledge to other activities you do a thousand times a day.

And, finally, the Queen of Soul, who we have been waiting for, delivers another variation of the theme song as we embrace our Natural Woman.

Science Nerd Candy Bowl: nothing new to add

How you might feel after this lesson: Got your groove on, girl!; Pelvis and shoulders connected; Clearer sensation of pelvis rocking with the breath; Taller; Tuned into your root chakra/pelvic floor; Open to the relationship between breath, pelvis, glutes and ring muscles; Aware of the subtle ring muscle coordination of the eyes, nostrils, lips, palms and soles of feet; Stand with the elegance of Audrey Hepburn, and sit down as well.
