In Honor of the Play Series: An Intro To The National Museum of Play
National Museum of Play Is Serious
Play from toys, to maker labs, butterfly gardens, massive jungle gyms
Even a seriously heavy science journal on play
Did you know that Rochester, NY, is the home of the Strong National Museum of Play? The museum not only offers on-site exhibits including The National Archives of Game Show History, The International Center for the History of Electronic Games, The National Toy Halls of Fame, The World Video Hall of Fame, A Skyline Climb, The Play Lab, Women in Video Games, Butterfly Garden, plus Pinball, Peanuts (Snoopy et al), Barbies and 90’s doll crazes, Comic Book Heroes and much, much more.
The museum even publishes The American Journal of Play, an interdisciplinary journal written for a diverse international readership, with articles such as: How Children Coped in the First Months of the Pandemic Lockdown: Free Time, Play, Family Togetherness, and Helping Out at Homeopens; Video Game Play: Myths and Benefits; Portrayals of Play-Based Learning: Misalignments among Public Discourse, Classroom Realities, and Research; Playful Learning and Raising Successful Children in the Twenty-First Century: An Interview with Kathy Hirsh-Pasek and Roberta Michnick Golinkoffo; The Power of Play: Learning What Comes Naturally. Talk about serious fun.
Composing Classics: A History of Video Game Music is my favorite online collection offering. Big up to my animator nephew Jacob Lenard, who tuned me into this musical genre . Berkelee School of Music sees video game music composition as a a major growth sector.
