Week 2- The Director / Collector

A variation on the “Dual Pelvic Clocks” lesson from Alan Questel

Almost all creativity involves purposeful play.
— Abraham Maslow

Dr. Stuart Brown described 8 “play personalities” based on animal and human natural behaviors: The Joker - laughs; The Kinesthete - joy in movement; The Explorer - go deep; The Competitor - games or goals; The Director - organize; The Storyteller - imagine; The Collector - make connections; The Artist - express. This series takes a dive into ‘play personalities’ as a reframe for approaching classic ATM lessons.

What part of you likes to organize the gang or get the party together? Maybe you like creating labels. “The Director” brings order and makes things happen, especially in the social realm. She connects the dots to bring the group forward.

And what about, maybe, the part that loves to compare and contrast? “The Collector” delights in adding new experiences or has a blast looking for interesting things to add to her collection. She is delighted by the variations on a theme.

People rarely succeed unless they have fun in what they are doing.

Infinity Hips in action - Hula Hoop master at play

This week, it’s a seated lesson to get those hips going. It’s a connect-the-dots around the hips in the form of the infinity sign, figure 8, or, in classic ATM language - dual clocks.

As the director, seek the connections from sit bone to sit bone as the hips rock side-to-side, front-to-back, and diagonal-to-diagonal. Drive the movement with the intention of getting the whole body synched up and coordinated.

The collector knows clocks are not just found in the hips. There can be shoulder clocks, eye clocks, elbow clocks, foot clocks: all opportunities to find the infinite in the mundane. A way to find wholeness by finding similarities between parts of self that aren’t consciously connected.

Put together with last week’s rib shimmy, this lesson brings a sense of the entire body in joyfully fluidity: sashay like Beyonce, paddle the kayak, peddle the bike, rotate around the tee, dance like Audrey or Rita.
