No Crunch Abs - V2 - 5 - Walk Like An Egyptian

More Abs and Arms

The Chanukia/Candelabra Lesson For Supported Twisting and Lifting

Obliques connect the pelvis to the upper body in the front and back. We carry it up and forward

Working the diagonals from the abs to the shoulders using the arms as levers: that’s pretty much what this lesson is up to. More whole-body strengthening for the lower belly, and softening for the low back.

The obliques connect the ribs to the pelvis, enabling bending, twisting, and side bending. In the back, the lats connect the spine and shoulders. Working together, the arms get the support to move with ease.

Finding the ease in moving the arms and shoulders through the abs is the goal here. To get there, we use “candelabra” or “Egyptian” arms to move the shoulder blades, and the abs to move the shoulder blades.

Begin supine with knees bent with elbows bent and on the floor at shoulder height, fingertips magnetized toward the ceiling: the candles in the candelabra. The lower arms rock on the elbows to drop the palms down towards the toes, and then (back of hands) drop to floor behind, inner arm close to the ear if possible. Feel it in the scapulae, the upper back and chest. Find the coordination in the back. Then add abs and see if you, too, find greater ease.

The grand finale, is, of course, a walk - like an Egyptian. Or as Michael Jackson and dancers in “Remember the Time,” moving like Egyptians. (This scene is extracted from a 9-minute Michael Jackson video featuring Eddie Murphy, Imam, Magic Johnson. Someone synched it to the Bangles and - voila!)

The Voice-O-Meter featured sounds this week:

  • Heart Sound: HAAAA, like a giggle or sigh of relief, releasing hate and making room for love

  • Lung Sound: SSSSSSSS, like wind in the dry autumn leaves, releasing grief and making room for courage

Set Up:

  • Lying on a mat on the floor with knees bent and arms extended at shoulder height, with support for head and knees as needed

  • OR sitting on a firm chair with knees and hips level, with possible support for arms at shoulder height

How you might feel after this lesson: Got your groove on, girl!; Stronger, more awake lower abs, with a low back that releases; Pelvis and shoulders connected; Clearer sensation of abs synched to the breath, chest, upper back and arms; Ready to let your hair get big and walk like an Egyptian.
