About Walking - Recap - In the Mirror, Walking

Floor As Mirror For Full Body Walking

Based on “AY60: On the Stomach” By Moshe Feldenkrais

We return to a familiar lesson in yet another context: the “What is Different, What’s the Same” lesson to summarize the elements we explored as we broke down the supremely complex act of walking.

Nothing is permanent about our behavior patterns except our belief that they are so.

In order to change our mode of action, we must change the image of ourselves that we carry within us.

Learning to inhibit unwanted contractions of muscles that function without, or in spite of, our will, is the main task in coordinated action.
— ― Moshé Feldenkrais

This is the lesson where we survey all the major joints, hips and spinal actions, looking for improvements, new kinks that show up as our systems change, and new areas of curiosity. The floor is our mirror, giving honest feedback, as only a floor can!

This clear feedback, what we are actually doing, is critical to having a clear self image, and inviting the possibility of growth.

The goal of this lesson is to highlight the connections we have been developing in this series, bring them to consciousness, and, hopefully, reveal a little more of the Wonder Woman smiling at you, and encouraging you from the other side of the mirror.

This lesson starts on the back, rolls to the tummy, and then back to supine. You might want some support for your head when lying on your back, and some padding for your belly, and maybe chest or underarms, for the prone (on your belly) part. If you aren’t into tummy time, no problem! That part is easily translated to the back.

You could also sit in an armless, flat-bottom chair with a small footstool to take some pressure off your low back

Set Up:

  • On a mat on the floor, with possible extra padding for belly and chest when prone

  • OR - on a firm bottom, armless chair with a small footstool to help keep back released

How You Might Feel After This Lesson: Connected through the entire torso; Ribs open and flexible; Breath deep and wide; Arms resting easily in shoulder sockets; Shoulder girdle - shoulder blades, clavicles - resting comfortably over upper ribs; Tuned into any new ease that you have developed, or new kinks that might have been revealed with changes; A clearer self image of you making the basic movements of walking; Regal posture as you glide across the room.
